Energy Surveys – an Energy Action Plan

In a recent study within the Third Party Logistics (3PL) industry, the Carbon Trust identified that only approximately 30% of the highlighted energy and carbon savings detailed by their energy surveys had been realised.

There some clear steps in order to increase energy efficiency and deliver savings to your organisation:

Assess / Detail:

An energy audit of the company’s facility will vary in length depending on the complexity of the operation; however it will typically take between one and five days.

An initial assessment of the overall energy demand and the key areas of energy usage will be followed by a more in-depth look at systems and processes undertaken and their energy usage and efficiency.

Discussions will be undertaken with key site personnel in order to assess their understanding of energy usage and efficiency and to assess reactions to energy efficiency measures already implemented by your company. This will help shape the provisions within the Site Action Plan.

Agree / Design:

A report will be compiled from the information collated during the survey. This will comprise of:

  • A breakdown of the total energy usage by area and application.
  • An assessment of the existing controls and energy efficiency at the site.
  • Examples of energy efficiency measures and technologies which could be implemented in order deliver energy, cost, environmental and maintenance benefits.
  • A matrix will be delivered balancing cost and carbon savings against cost of implementation.
  • A Draft Action Plan for discussion.

Act / Deliver:

Following delivery of the Energy Audit Report and Draft Action Plan, discussions will be undertaken to assess your company’s views on the recommendations made and how best to implement the favoured projects.

Keith Wyatt Consulting can assist your company in arranging suitable quotations from solution providers for the energy and environmental projects highlighted within the report.

Once quotations have been received and chosen suppliers agreed, Keith Wyatt Consulting can also assist in making applications for funding for those projects where relevant. Pay-As-You-Save agreements and 0% Interest Loans from the Carbon Trust will often fund projects entirely out of the savings made.

Keith Wyatt Consulting can help project manage the implementation of the energy efficiency projects and importantly the management of change.

Monitor and Promote:

On-going monitoring and reporting of the savings delivered by the projects will help with internal justification of the financial investments and the changes made in systems or technologies. Marketing and PR materials can be compiled in order for your company to promote its “Green Credentials”.
